The Parent-Student Relationship In College Searches

By putting more parental pressure on a child, even some of the most well-intentioned parents can damage their relationship with their children by trying to control the college search process, as well as the ultimate decision. As parents, we want what is best for our children. However, all too often what we think is best for them may be what would be best for us. Parents can, and should, provide guidance and help their students explore various options by helping them research and visiting campuses, in person or virtually. This guidance can include helping compile manageable lists (8-10 potential schools) and being realistic about what colleges to include on those lists. Wanting your child to receive an Ivy League education may not be realistic. More importantly, it may not be the direction your child wants to take. That’s why it’s of utmost importance to allow your child to lead the way in these discussions. Foregoing that control can be difficult, but with the information found within the resource featured alongside this post, parents can feel more comfortable approaching these conversations.
